Canadian Temporary Resident Visa Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)?

A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), often called a visitor visa or entry visa, is an official document placed in your passport that shows you’ve met the requirements to enter Canada as a temporary visitor for tourism, family visits, business, or other short-term purposes.

Who needs a TRV to enter Canada?

You need a TRV if you’re from a country that is visa-required by Canada. If your country is visa-exempt, you may instead qualify for an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for air travel to Canada.

What can I do with a TRV?

A TRV allows you to enter Canada and stay temporarily. Most visitors can stay for up to six months, but the final period of stay is decided by the border services officer at entry.

Does a TRV allow me to work or study in Canada?

No. A TRV only allows entry and short-term stay. If you want to work or study, you must also have a valid work permit or study permit issued by Canadian authorities.

What are the fees?

Please view our pricing page.

How long is a TRV valid?

TRVs can be issued as single-entry or multiple-entry visas and may be valid for up to 10 years or until your passport expires—whichever is sooner.

Do I need to submit biometrics?

Yes — in most cases, you must provide fingerprints and a photo after applying. This biometric information is valid for 10 years, making future applications easier.

If I’m applying for a Study or Work Permit, do I still need a TRV?

If you are from a visa-required country and applying for a study or work permit from outside Canada, a TRV is usually issued automatically along with your permit — you do not need to apply for it separately. If you are already in Canada and extending your status (e.g., study or work permit), you may need to apply for a new TRV separately before traveling outside Canada and returning.

How long does TRV processing take?

Processing times vary based on the visa office handling your application, completeness of your application, and whether biometrics are required. RMS Visa consultants can help prepare your application to avoid delays.
